So youโ€™re planning your first trip to Europe? Where do you even begin?

With 40+ countries โ€“ each with its own culture, cuisine and unique appeal (not to mention swoon-worthy romantic hotels) โ€“ choosing isnโ€™t easy. Some are all about sun-soaked beaches. Others pull you in with storybook villages and fairytale castles.

Weโ€™ve experienced that mix first-hand.

George was born in Romania and raised in Germany. I (Janice) landed in England as a teenager and quickly hopped over to France.

Our first Europe trip together? Portugal โ€“ also the place where our luggage, passports and money were stolen from our rental car on a beach day! We were left with just the bikini and swim trunks we had on. (Not our finest travel moment.)

It didnโ€™t deter us from returning to Europe (or Portugal!) though.

Since then, weโ€™ve been back countless times โ€“ on slow savor-it-all vacations and on cruises (both river and ocean). And here, we share the places and countries we think are just right for a first-time European adventure.

Us in Portugal
Snapshots of us enjoying Europe – Italy, Croatia and Portugal (one trip at a time)

Best places to visit in Europe for the first time? Quick answer

  • Best for history โ€“ Turkey’s ancient Greek and Roman ruins are next level. (Weโ€™re looking at you, Ephesus!)
  • Best for beach bliss โ€“ We loveย Portugalโ€™s Algarve region, Croatia (with its unbelievably clear blue water) and Greece.
  • Best for easy travel โ€“ With excellent rail and flight connections, Germany is one of the easiest countries to visit โ€“ plus you can easily hop to Poland, Switzerland, the Czech Republic or France.
  • Best for romance โ€“ Italy! Thereโ€™s nothing quite like the gorgeous cities of Venice or Florence.
  • Best for food โ€“ Franceย is catnip for foodies. And donโ€™t get us started on the sumptuous French wines!
  • Best for a bit of everything โ€“ For beaches, mountain hiking and charming towns all rolled into one, look to the Spanish island of Mallorca.

Donโ€™t try to see it all (our #1 Europe tip!)

Martina Franca, Italy
On one trip to Italy, we spent the whole time in the Puglia region โ€“ great decision!

Before we get into the nitty-gritty, we have to say thisโ€ฆ One of our top Europe travel tips for first-timers (actually, for anyone) is not to cram everything into a single trip.

Europe isnโ€™t going anywhere.

Think of your first visit as a delicious introduction โ€“ not the whole feast. Bite into one or two countries, explore them well and leave yourself wanting more.

We get the urge to do it all. On our first Europe vacation as a couple, I wanted to squeeze in multiple countries before we settled on just Portugal. In the end, slowing down was the best decision.

Because itโ€™s not about ticking boxes.

Youโ€™re supposed to enjoy the experience. And thatโ€™s hard to do if you exhaust yourself racing from place to place. (And โ€“ thank you for asking โ€“ after we recovered our passports and clothes, we had a wonderful lazily-paced three-week road trip in southern Portugal.)

7 Amazing places in Europe for first-timers

1) Croatia

Popular Banje Beach is just a short walk from Dubrovnik Old Town.
Popular Banje Beach is just a short walk from Dubrovnik Old Town

We fell hard for Croatia the first time we went โ€“ a place of medieval walled towns, impossibly clear turquoise waters and UNESCO-listed sights almost too beautiful to be real.

Itโ€™s not usually the country suggested for a first visit to Europe. (Most people point you straight to Italy or France for the big-name capitals.)

But thereโ€™s something to be said for starting somewhere that sets the bar high from day one, right?

A great 14-day itinerary kicks off in Dubrovnik. Walk atop the cityโ€™s medieval walls, get happily lost in the Old Town, then cool off with a swim at one of Dubrovnikโ€™s lovely beaches

From there, go island hopping by ferry through the Dalmatian Islands โ€“ visiting Korcula, Hvar and Brac (with their delightful beach towns) before continuing on to Split.

Croatia highlights

  • Splitโ€™s living palace โ€“ โ€œWhere is Diocletianโ€™s Palace?โ€ visitors often ask in Split. Shopkeepers laugh and say, โ€œYouโ€™re in it!โ€ These 1,700-year-old Roman ruins arenโ€™t just a site. Theyโ€™re the beating heart of the city, filled with cafรฉs, homes and hidden corners to explore.
  • Trogir โ€“ Pay a visit to Trogir, a tiny UNESCO-listed town set on a small island, where stone alleys, a palm-lined promenade and a stunning Romanesque cathedral give it a delightful old-world atmosphere.
  • Adriatic beaches โ€“ With miles of coastline, Croatia spoils you for choice. In Dubrovnik, we like taking the 15-minute boat ride to Lokrum Island (a protected nature reserve) to sun on smooth rock slabs and climb down ladders to swim in the clearest sea.
  • Flavorful local cuisine โ€“ Expect lots of fresh grilled fish and seafood, plus inky black risotto. And Croatiaโ€™s desserts are dangerously easy to love!
  • Plitvice lakes โ€“ Walk wooden footbridges over blue lakes and past cascading waterfalls in Plitvice Lakes National Park โ€“ one of Europeโ€™s most jaw-dropping natural wonders.

Where to stay in Croatia

  • Dubrovnik โ€“ Offering spectacular views of the sparkling sea, the 5-star Hotel Excelsior is just a 5-minute stroll to Dubrovnikโ€™s Old Town. (We love it so much, weโ€™ve stayed here a couple of times now.)
  • Splitย โ€“ Set in a Renaissance-era palace,ย the boutique Judita Palace Heritage Hotelย puts you right in the center of Split, with everything within easy walking distance.

2) Mallorca (Spain)

Gold-colored Gothic cathedral of Palma de Mallorca, against the backdrop of the blue sea
With its Gothic cathedral, historic old town and seaside bicycle path, the island’s capital of Palma de Mallorca is a great base to stay for at least a few days

Sun-drenched and endlessly varied, Mallorca is a European island we return to again and again.

From hiking donkey trails in the Tramuntana mountains to swimming in turquoise coves, we canโ€™t get enough of all the fabulous things to do here.

Two lovely towns to include in your Mallorca itinerary are Deia and the lesser-known gem of Santanyi.

Mallorca highlights

  • Old Town of Palma de Mallorca โ€“ Wander honey-colored lanes and donโ€™t miss the show-stopping cathedral (La Seu is even more impressive up close).
  • Puerto Pollensa โ€“ Whether you stay or just visit briefly, we challenge you to not fall for this laid-back seaside resort favorite.
  • Vintage train to Soller โ€“ Ride the historic train from Palma, then stay a while for hiking, tram rides to Port de Soller and other fun activities.

Where to stay in Mallorca

  • Palma de Mallorca โ€“ There are severalย great areas to stay, but the Old Town is our recommendation for your first visit.ย Can Bordoyย is a gorgeous 5-star boutique hotel, with historic sights on its doorstep and two small pools (a rooftop splash pool and another in its leafy courtyard garden).
  • Deia โ€“ Hotel Es Moli charms with its La Muleta beach club set on a private beach cove โ€“ heavenly, and reason enough to lure us back to Mallorca again!
  • Puerto Pollensa โ€“ย Hotel Illa Dโ€™Orย is an elegant seaside classic.

Actually, Mallorca is full of enchanting accommodations โ€“ this is finca country, after all. A stay at a countryside finca like Finca Caโ€™s Curial in Soller is part of the experience.

3) Portugal

Visit Porto in northern Portugal for its buildings clad with colorful tiles (called azulejos), port wine and delicious food.
Visit Porto in northern Portugal for its buildings clad with colorful tiles (called azulejos), port wine and delicious food

Portugal may have once stolen our stuff. But these days, itโ€™s our hearts itโ€™s run off with.

Lisbon is the capital. Porto is its cool little sister.

Porto vs. Lisbon? Itโ€™s a toss-up. But if you only have time for one, weโ€™d nudge you toward Lisbon for its bigger lineup of historic sights and attractions.

Portugal highlights

  • Porto โ€“ Wondering is Porto worth visiting?ย Absolutely! (Especially if you read our tips onย how to avoid the crowds.) We mixed beach bicycling, wine tasting and sightseeing for a fun not-so-typical Porto itinerary.
  • Madeira โ€“ This lush Atlantic island is made for hiking, especially along its famous levadas (old irrigation channels that crisscross the landscape).
  • Port wine โ€“ We spentย three wonderful daysย in the Douro Valley, the birthplace of port wine (after a teaser on a Douro day trip from Porto).
  • Algarve โ€“ Golden beaches, dramatic cliffs and hidden sea caves โ€“ this coastline is pure eye candy.
  • Sintra โ€“ Visit Sintra, a dreamscape of regal splendor, where palaces likeย Penaย andย the mysterious Quinta da Regaleiraย stand amid lush forests.

Where to stay in Portugal

  • Lisbon โ€“ Dating back to 1870, the historicย Olissippo Lapa Palaceย is positively dripping with opulence (read why we love it).
  • Porto โ€“ We pickedย The Rebello Hotel & Spaย on the Gaia side of the Douro River, with spacious suites, river views and a rooftop restaurant. It was the cat’s meow! Or if you fancy staying in a former 500-year-old palace in the heart of Porto, you can โ€“ atย PortoBay Flores.

4) Italy

The beautiful Amalfi Coast is one of the best places to visit in Italy.
The beautiful Amalfi Coast is one of the many jewels to visit in Italy

Feel like you need a little dolce vita? Italy delivers in spades.

Itโ€™s home to the Eternal City of Rome, plus a lineup of glorious Italian cities that reads like a greatest hits list โ€“ Venice, Pisa, Florence, Verona, Bologna.

Then layer in Tuscan hill towns, vineyard-draped countryside and those postcard-perfect seaside villages of the Cinque Terre.

Suddenly, you realize Italy has many beautiful places to visit. And your first trip wonโ€™t feel like itโ€™s enough!

Planning a trip to Italy comes down to narrowing your choices โ€“ because there are a lot of good ones.

Italy highlights

  • Venice โ€“ No travel guide on Europe is worth its salt without mention of romantic Venice. Itโ€™s all gorgeous palazzos, canals and charming bridges. (If youโ€™re visiting on a cruise, hereโ€™s how to get from the port to Veniceย itself.)
  • Matera โ€“ This UNESCO-listed cave cityย stuns with its ancient stone dwellings and boutique hotels carved into rock.
  • Pisa โ€“ What can we say! Theย Leaning Tower of Pisa is an icon and a must-see.
  • Food and drink โ€“ Pizza, pasta, Prosecco and gelato. Enough said.
  • Cinque Terre โ€“ The only problem with these five colorful villages is that theyโ€™re too darn pretty for their own good! (Visit in the shoulder seasons to dodge some of the crowds.)
  • Vatican City โ€“ Right in Rome, itโ€™s technically a separate country. The Sistine Chapel is unforgettable.
  • Sicily โ€“ This island beckons with its fiery heart โ€“ Mount Etna (Europeโ€™s largest active volcano) โ€“ where hiking and wine tasting are popular. Taorminaโ€™s beaches are also legendary.
  • Amalfi Coast โ€“ Perched on cliffs that plunge down into the sea, Positano, Sorrento and Amalfiย offer enough beauty for a lifetime.

5) Greece

Octopi drying outside in the hot Greek sun
Head to the Greek islands, and you may see octopi hanging outside to dry in the hot Greek sun

Mamma mia! We love Greece!

There are many hidden gems and unique places to visit here โ€“ and weโ€™re itching to explore more. (Kythera, weโ€™ve got our eye on you!)

With hundreds of islands scattered across the Ionian and Aegean Seas (hello Mykonos!), plus ancient heavy-hitters like Athens and Delphi, Greece is made for both beach lovers and history buffs.

If youโ€™re going to Europe for the first time for a beach vacation, weโ€™re full of praise for Greece.

Start your travel planning with these fun facts โ€“ like Santorini being the only inhabited caldera in the world! And timing matters: July and August can be sizzling hot. We much prefer September โ€“ warm, sunny and far more relaxed.

Greece highlights

  • Ancient ruins โ€“ Sites like Philippiย are truly fascinating. What a place to explore!
  • Greek food โ€“ Hands down some of the best in the Mediterranean. Feta cheese, honey, olive oil, Greek yoghurtโ€ฆ Whatโ€™s not to like?
  • Santorini โ€“ From watching the sunset in Oia (with zillions of other sunset worshippers!) to walking across the spine of the island from Oia to Imerovigli, Santorini is just plain fun.

Where to stay in Greece

  • Athensย โ€“ The deluxeย King George, a Luxury Collection Hotelย has a prime location across from Syntagma Square. Its restaurant offers fantastic views of the Acropolis.
  • Creteย โ€“ A picture-perfect place to stay,ย St. Nicholas Bayย is tucked into the coastline and boasts amazing sea views. We had a dreamy time staying here.
  • Rhodesย โ€“ We canโ€™t choose just one amazing hotel, so here areย 10 boutique hotels in Rhodesย to choose from!
  • Santorini โ€“ For all-out luxury, we stayed atย Vedema. For a cave hotel, weโ€™ve bedded down in Grace Santorini andย Ikies. All are honeymoon-perfect.

6) Turkey

Cruising by Istanbul's Bosphorus Palace
Passing the Dolmabahce Palace on a Bosphorus cruise in Istanbul

Turkey doesnโ€™t always make the shortlist for a first trip to Europe.

But it should.

Straddling two continents, it blends East and West in a way few places can.

One minute youโ€™re wandering through ancient Roman ruins, the next youโ€™re sipping cocktails on a terrace as the call to prayer echoes across the rooftops. Add in mountains, beaches and some delectable food, and youโ€™ve got a destination that surprises at every turn.

Not sure where to start? Browse ourย two-week itinerary of Turkey โ€“ itโ€™s a great way to piece it all together.

Turkey highlights

  • Istanbulโ€™s hammams โ€“ Sink into the steamy ritual of a traditional bathhouse at one of theseย luxury hammams. Itโ€™s part relaxation, part cultural experience and completely unforgettable.
  • Cappadocia โ€“ Sleep in a cave hotel, explore rock-cut churches and float above those famous fairy chimneys at sunrise onย a hot air balloon ride.
  • Ephesus โ€“ Theseย ancient Greek and Roman ruinsย are astonishingly well preserved. And yes, they left us (almost) speechless.

Where to stay in Turkey

  • Istanbulย โ€“ The crossroads of culture that is Istanbul has a wealth of terrific boutique hotels and luxury accommodations.
  • Cappadociaย โ€“ Cave hotels are the whole point here.ย Esbelli Eviย is full of character and antiques, while Argos delivers luxe vibes and sweeping views from its hilltop perch.
  • Bodrumย โ€“ This coastal resort is the place to stay for sun, sea and sand in Turkey. Tryย Macakiziย for a chic deluxe beach resort orย Casa dellโ€™Arteย for something more artsy and classic.

7) Germany

Dresden Royal Palace
Dresden wowed us with its Green Vault museums

We have family ties to Germany, so we try to visit whenever weโ€™re in Europe.

But even without that personal connection, Germany easily earns a spot on any first-time Europe itinerary.

Youโ€™ll find world-class museums, opulent palaces and scenic bike rides along the Elbe River. In Bonn, you can visit the house where Beethoven was born. Come winter, you can ski or snowboard in the Alps and browse some of the best European Christmas markets over the festive season.

And of course, we canโ€™t forget Oktoberfest!

Germany highlights

  • Berlin โ€“ Give yourself at leastย one day in Berlin! Take an art tour, see the Berlin Wall and visit one (or two) of its many museums.
  • Baden-Baden โ€“ Get your spa on in Baden-Baden. Tryย Friedrichsbad. Yes, itโ€™s nude and co-ed. But it elevates the simple act of getting clean into a decadent 3ยฝ-hour ritual.
  • Dresden โ€“ Spend a couple of days in Dresdenย to enjoy what this delightful city has to offer. (Hint: Ogle exquisite treasures in the Green Vault, one of the worldโ€™s most extraordinary museums!)

Where to stay in Germany

  • Berlinย โ€“ The Hotel de Rome Berlin is just a stoneโ€™s throw from the Brandenburg Gate and central train station, and its rooms and spa are sumptuous.
  • Baden-Badenย โ€“ We loved the graciousย Hotel Belle Epoque. Built in 1874, itโ€™s within walking distance to most of Baden-Badenโ€™s sights.
  • Dresdenย โ€“ The 5-starย Hotel Taschenbergpalais Kempinskiย offers elegant rooms in city center.
  • Hamburg โ€“ We couldnโ€™t have picked a more perfect location on Alster Lake (or a more perfect hotel) than the Hotel Atlantic Kempinski. A grand classicโ€ฆ

Some Europe moments to experience on your first visit

Beyond choosing countries, there are certain experiences that just feel like Europe. These are good ones for a first trip โ€“ or any trip, for that matter.

1) Wander through Monet’s dreamy gardens

Roses bloom in front of the pink Claude Monet house in Giverny.
Straight out of a painting: Monet’s pretty pink house in Giverny

Strolling through Claude Monetโ€™s gardens in Giverny (France) feels like stepping into one of his paintings.

The lily ponds, the Japanese bridge, the bursts of colorโ€ฆ Itโ€™s all instantly recognizable.

Are theyย the most beautiful gardens in the world? Maybe!

2) Walk (even a little of) the Camino de Santiago

If you love hiking, theย Camino de Santiagoย  deserves a spot on your radar.

This legendary pilgrimage route winds through France and Spain, marked by the scallop shell symbol.

You donโ€™t have to do the whole thing โ€“ just walking a small section is a memorable experience.

3) Take a European river cruise

A lovely way to see Europe is from the water on a river cruise (with bicycling included).

Sail the Rhine or Danube, glide past vineyard-covered hills along the Douro or visit Amsterdam on the Moselle.

Donโ€™t miss a cruise along the scenic Seine, where youโ€™ll stop at picturesque places like Villequier, the former home of author Victor Hugo.

4) Visit a palace

Stockholm's Drottningholm Palace is a visual feast.
You take a boat ride across Malaren Lake to reach Stockholm’s Drottningholm Palace

Europe does palaces very well.

From headline stars like Versailles, Windsor Castle and Neuschwanstein (the one that inspired Disney) to lesser-known gems like Drottningholm (in Stockholm) and Franceโ€™s Chateau de Chantilly, these grand residences bring history to life in the most opulent way.

5) Get gloriously lost in an old town

Sometimes, the nicest thing to do is just wander. Europeโ€™s old towns are made for it.

Dubrovnikโ€™s Old Town is especially jaw-dropping, wrapped within its original medieval walls. Elsewhere,ย Stockholmโ€™s colorful Gamla Stanย is a joy to walk, while Tallinโ€™s Old Town in Estonia charms with its striking Gothic architecture.

And just like thatโ€ฆ Youโ€™re hooked on Europe!

Europe has a way of getting under your skin โ€“ in the best possible way. One trip is never quite enough (trust us on that).

Sort out the practical stuff early โ€“ book your hotels, lock in your flights and trains, and have a loose plan. Then leave room for wandering, long lunches and those unexpected little moments that end up being your favorites.

And donโ€™t be surprised if, before youโ€™re even home, youโ€™re already dreaming up your next trip.
