Wondering where to stay in Kandy when only a lovely hotel will do?
Sri Lanka’s cultural capital has plenty of backpacker digs and inexpensive guesthouses. But there are some wonderful upscale hideaways too – and for a deluxe stay, we’d head for the green hills outside the busy city center.
We spent several days in the city on our Sri Lanka trip – taking in the sacred Temple of the Tooth, botanical gardens and other sights, before boarding the famously scenic train from Kandy to Ella.
And having stayed at many of Sri Lanka’s top hotels, we know the kind of places that make a trip extra special.
So here’s our pick of the five best luxury hotels in Kandy – from intimate boutique retreats to a delightful tea-estate escape.
Best places to stay in Kandy, Sri Lanka
We’ve organized our five top picks by distance from central Kandy, starting with the closest.

1) Kings Pavilion Luxury Hotel
You’re not straying too far from the sights when you stay at Kings Pavilion Luxury Hotel.
Set in a leafy hillside neighborhood, this boutique escape comes with wonderful mountain and valley views – plus a big dollop of peace and quiet. And it’s only a 10- to 15-minute tuk-tuk ride from central Kandy.
You’ll find a small spa, sauna and steam room, along with complimentary bicycles and even painting facilities.
A small infinity pool overlooking the valley adds to the tranquil setting.
Rooms and suites
Nine rooms and suites are sprinkled across three hillside pavilions, from generously-sized deluxe rooms to seriously spacious 1,000+ sq. ft. suites.
The look is contemporary Sri Lankan with plenty of character – cool stone underfoot, rich teak, antiques and handcrafted furniture. Paintings of Kandyan dancers add local flair. And if you book a suite, there’s a Jacuzzi waiting too.
Outside, every room opens onto its own green retreat, with either a large balcony or secluded garden. Pull up a chair, deal a hand of cards and pour a gin-and-tonic – a rather nice way to wind down after a day in Kandy.
Room tips
- The King’s Suite is the romantic pick – It has a four-poster canopy bed and plenty of space for a more indulgent stay.
- Families should look at the Queen’s Suite – It comes with two double beds and a separate living area.
Good to know
After a busy day exploring, you may be quite happy to stay put for dinner. The hotel restaurant serves à la carte Sri Lankan and international dishes – accompanied by those lovely hillside views.

2) The Elephant Stables
Like the Kings Pavilion (#1 above), The Elephant Stables is a small luxury boutique hotel in Kandy, perched on a hill about a 10- to 15-minute tuk-tuk ride away.
But this one comes with a rather charming backstory.
The colonial-era bungalow was once the ancestral home of a Ceylonese nobleman, whose family kept elephants on the property – hence the name.
Outside, tropical gardens surround around a sweet infinity pool, with views across the hills toward the distant Knuckles Mountains.
Rooms and suites
There are seven accommodations at the main hotel:
- Three individually designed rooms and two suites – Mixing four-poster beds and Sri Lankan antiques with polished concrete, contemporary furnishings and splashes of color
- Stand-alone cottage – A good pick for families, with space for two adults and two children.
- A luxury tent – And this one deserves a little more explanation…
A royal tent!
Now, about that tent… For something different and fun, families can go glamping in the 915 sq. ft. Royal Luxury Tent.
Fully air-conditioned, it has a four-poster master bed, a separate sleeping area with two single beds, living and dining spaces and a proper bathroom.
Just remember that canvas walls don’t muffle sound like hotel walls – you may hear animals and some city noise at night.
Riverdale Bungalow
For more space and privacy, book the 2-bedroom Riverdale Bungalow (1,400 sq. ft.), a couple of miles away. It’s filled with beautiful antiques, specially made for Queen Elizabeth II’s 1954 state visit.
And here’s a rather fabulous perk – it comes with your own chef!
There’s no pool, but the workaround is fun – you get complimentary rides in a vintage Mini Moke or Austin A55 to The Elephant Stables for a swim.
Good to know
The dinner menu isn’t huge. You may be asked to order dinner in advance, but eating here is very much part of the experience. The Sri lankan curries are excellent!

3) Cinnamon Citadel Kandy
For a larger, more resort-style stay, the 115-room Cinnamon Citadel Kandy is a good-value upscale choice – though think “polished 4-star resort” rather than “intimate 5-star luxury.”
Its trump card is the setting. The hotel stretches along a lush bend of the Mahaweli River, just outside Kandy.
A large outdoor pool sits above the river, with loungers for kicking back after a hot morning of temple-hopping. The open-air lounge and dining areas make the most of the water and forested hill views too.
Rooms and suites
Rooms are comfortable and large, starting at about 423 sq. ft. (including the terrace) for the Superior categories:
- Standard Superior Rooms – Have balconies or terraces overlooking the gardens
- Superior River View Rooms – Same size, but with balconies facing the Mahaweli
- Deluxe Rooms – Larger (527 sq. ft.), with king beds, river views, bathtubs and balconies or terraces
There’s also one 753 sq. ft. Suite – the top option – with a four-poster king bed, separate living space, bathtub and river-facing balcony or terrace.
The décor is comfortable rather than cutting-edge. And if you ask us, some of the furnishings and bathrooms look a tad dated.
Room tips
- Book a river-view room – The Mahaweli is a big part of the appeal, so we’d skip the garden-facing rooms.
- For more space, go for a Deluxe Room – You get an extra 100 sq. ft., plus a bathtub and river view.
- Ask for a quiet room – If you’re sensitive to noise, request one well away from the Lounge Bar and evening entertainment, as music can carry to nearby rooms.
Dining
Panorama is the main restaurant, serving big breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets, with everything from Sri Lankan to Indian, Thai, Chinese and Western dishes.
But you don’t have to hit the buffet every night. For a quieter dinner, reserve a table at Chutneys, the hotel’s à la carte Indian restaurant overlooking the river.
Cocktails and light bites are served at the Lounge Bar, which stays open until midnight.
Good to know
- It attracts tour groups – With 115 rooms and a full-service resort setup, Cinnamon Citadel is (and feels) busier than our boutique picks. The buffet restaurant, in particular, gets lively at breakfast and dinner.
- You’ll need wheels – Like the two hotels above, figure on about 10 to 15 minutes by car or tuk-tuk to Kandy, depending on traffic.

4) Jetwing Kandy Gallery, a Luxury Reserve
Step onto your balcony and listen… Birds chirping. Cicadas humming. Leaves rustling in the breeze. And not a honking tuk-tuk in earshot!
That’s the blissful soundtrack at Jetwing Kandy Gallery.
Set on the banks of the Mahaweli River in Gurudeniya, it’s surrounded by a sea of green, with lush gardens, river views and misty hills rising beyond.
The look is contemporary luxury with a distinctly Sri Lankan sense of place. Sleek modern interiors are warmed up with rich wood, local artwork and craftsmanship inspired by Kandy’s royal heritage.
A beautiful pool
Then there’s the gorgeous infinity pool – seemingly spilling toward the river – just the spot for a cooling dip after a hot day of temple-hopping. It’s even long enough (55 feet) for a few proper laps before you surrender to a lounger.
Rooms and suites
The hotel’s 26 rooms and suites feature polished wood floors and stone-tiled balconies or terraces overlooking the river or gardens. And they’re exceptionally spacious:
- Luxury Rooms – Entry-level rooms (646 sq. ft.), with king, queen or twin beds, plus large bathrooms with soaking tubs and rain showers
- Gallery Suites – Larger again (721 sq. ft.), with private outdoor Jacuzzis on the balcony overlooking the Mahaweli River (they’d be our choice!)
- Kandyan Suites – A whopping 947 sq. ft. each, with high timbered ceilings, separate living rooms, walk-in closets, deep soaking tubs and expansive balconies
Butler service
This is a nice treat! Each room comes with personal butler service. There’s always someone on hand to arrange excursions, private dining and those little extras that make a stay feel special.
And they look after you wonderfully!
Dining
Come dinnertime, Riverscape, the main restaurant, serves up traditional Sri Lankan and Kandyan alongside international favorites – with the river and gardens as a backdrop.
Or turn up the romance with a private dinner on the lawn or pool deck under the stars.
Good to know
- There’s a tranquil spa (but no gym) – The spa specializes in Balinese treatments and therapies. (Get a massage with salt scrub.)
- It’s a little farther out from central Kandy – Allow roughly 20 to 30 minutes by car, depending on traffic.

5) W15 Hanthana Estate Kandy
Fancy playing tea planter for a few days?
A winding 15- to 30-minute drive from Kandy, the 5-star W15 Hanthana Estate Kandy delivers old-world country-house glamor – with knockout views of tea-green slopes and the misty Knuckles Range.
Dating from the early 20th century, the heritage bungalow has a tinkling grand piano, book-lined library, deep sofas and a wide pillared veranda seemingly designed for afternoon tea and pre-dinner cocktails.
Wander outside and you can swim in the infinity pool and play tennis or lawn croquet. Oh, and there’s polished butler service too. Of course!
No surprise W15 is recommended by the MICHELIN Guide…
Rooms and suites
With only 10 rooms and suites, W15 feels more like a private country house than a hotel.
The best digs are in the main bungalow, where antiques mingle with contemporary pieces. Bungalow Suites also have private walled gardens.
Room tips
- For a splurge, book the Master Bungalow Suite – It has sweeping, unobstructed mountain views and, if you’re a bath baby, it’s the only room with a bathtub as well as a shower.
- Stable Suites cost less – Housed in a converted stable block behind the main house, they’re smaller and have less old-world character. But you still get wonderful mountain views.
Dining well
Menus, meal times and even where you eat are tailored to your liking.
Go full English at breakfast or local with Sri Lankan specialties like string hoppers. Lunch might bring a traditional planter’s rice-and-curry feast, with the table disappearing beneath bowls of colorful curries and accompaniments.
Afternoon tea showcases local brews. Then come evening, join other guests for cocktails before sitting down to a three-course dinner.
Explore the Hanthana Hills
You could spend all day by the pool with a book.
But with those gorgeous green hills right outside? That would almost be sinful.
Head out with the resident naturalist on a guided walk through the Hanthana Hills Conservation Area, spotting birds and butterflies along the way. Or climb into the estate’s vintage open-top Land Rover and rumble along mountain tracks to scenic viewpoints and tea plantations.
Good to know
- There’s complimentary train-station pickup – W15 can collect you from the Peradeniya Railway Station.
- Plan on dining at the hotel – Given the secluded hillside setting, you won’t want to head back into Kandy for dinner. (And you can book on an all-inclusive basis.)
- Pack socks and insect repellent for walks – Ugh… You might encounter leeches on trails in the wet Hanthana Hills.
