5 Best Luxury Hotels in Galle (In the Fort and on Beaches)

Wondering where to stay in Galle? Inside its centuries-old Fort? Or on a palm-fringed beach nearby?
Decisions, decisions!
UNESCO-listed Galle Fort is the hip heart of southern Sri Lanka, with cobbled lanes, colonial buildings, an iconic lighthouse, cool cafés, funky boutiques and gorgeous heritage hotels tucked within its old coral-walled ramparts.
But just a few miles down the coast, beautiful beaches are dotted with small luxury hideaways – close enough to pop into the Fort for sightseeing and dinner.
We spent more than a week in Galle on our first month-long trip around Sri Lanka, staying at two of the island’s best luxury hotels. And now we’re returning soon, with a hot new beach hotel on our radar!

1) Why House
Staying at Why House feels a little like joining a British country house party in the tropics.
You have your own private room in the main house or one of the villas, surrounded by lush gardens of bougainvillea, breadfruit and cinnamon trees. But come evening, you join other guests for gin-and-tonics before dining together, family-style, in the breezy restaurant.
Why House is family-friendly, but we found it very romantic too – it’s one of our favorite small luxury boutique hotels in Galle.
Rooms and suites
The 10 air-conditioned rooms are individually decorated. And they’re exquisite – featuring polished wood or concrete floors, colonial-style furniture and covered verandas with cushioned seating.
British innkeeper Henrietta Cottam (“Hen” for short) has thought of everything – a vase of fresh flowers, organic lime-and-grapefruit bath products (but strangely, no body lotion), paperback novels and magazines, and even headache pills in a welcome wicker amenity basket.
Room tips
- The Cabanas are our favorite rooms – Reached by a covered walkway, these two separate hideaways are modern, spacious and private, with king-size beds and large open bathrooms. One overlooks the pool; the other faces the rice fields.
- Skip Room 6 in the Garden Villa – This room only has a small double four-poster bed (plus a loft with two single beds). It’s not ideal for a couple, especially if you’re used to a larger queen- or king-size bed.
Candlelight dining
There’s little reason to go out for dinner. Why House serves 3-course dinners by candlelight, using fresh ingredients sourced daily.
Hen asks in the morning if you’re dining in that evening.
Say “yes” if the “Modern Sri Lanka” menu is on!
We savored mulligatawny soup, chop-chop (fried chicken and veggies) and curries like chicken liver, prawn and spinach-coconut. For dessert, the warm sticky-date pudding and toffee sauce is seriously divine.
A pool made for lingering
The large outdoor swimming pool – indeed, all of Why House! – is a tranquil escape from the buzz of nearby Galle, six miles away. Some mornings, Hen organizes water aerobics led by an instructor.
There’s also a yoga shala and massage pavilion, and you can arrange massages, yoga and other activities when you feel like doing more than flopping by the pool.
Good to know
- This isn’t a beach hotel – But you don’t exactly miss out. Dalawella Beach is just a short walk or tuk-tuk ride away. (The hotel offers free tuk-tuk rides.) Its reef-protected lagoon is known for calm swimming and sea turtles. We rented beach beds and umbrellas for a song, and enjoyed wood-fired pizza and drinks at Wijaya Beach Bar.
- Galle Fort is close by – When you’re ready to swap beach time for sightseeing, the historic Fort is only a 15- to 20-minute tuk-tuk ride away.

2) Amangalla
The most luxurious 5-star hotel in Galle Fort itself? Amangalla gets our vote.
This is the place for couples and luxury lovers who want to soak up Galle’s history without skimping on the pampering.
A grand old history
Part of the uber-ritzy hotel collection Aman Resorts, it unfolds across a cluster of historic buildings dating back more than 300 years.
Its centerpiece is the former New Oriental Hotel, once a favorite stopover for passengers arriving by P&O steamship during the British colonial era.
Today, it’s all polished teak floors, soaring ceilings, whirring ceiling fans, antique furniture and graceful verandas.
Stepping inside feels a bit like slipping back into another era – only this one comes with impeccable Aman service and considerably more creature comforts.
Location, location, location
You couldn’t be more in the thick of historic Galle if you tried.
Amangalla sits right in the heart of the UNESCO-listed Galle Fort.
Rooms and suites
The 30 spacious rooms, chambers and suites all boast four-poster beds, freestanding bathtubs and oodles of period character.
Tall shuttered windows let in the tropical light, while antique chests, writing desks and planter’s chairs add to the old-world feel.
And, get this, in keeping with the serene Aman aesthetic, you won’t find TVs cluttering up the rooms!
Splurging on a suite? They have separate living areas and some overlook the Fort or Amangalla’s lush gardens.
A gorgeous garden retreat
What makes Amangalla particularly special is that you get all the atmosphere of staying inside Galle Fort, yet the hotel itself is very peaceful.
Palms and frangipani frame a long jade-green swimming pool, with shaded loungers and private ambalamas (traditional pavilions) nestled around the gardens.
After a hot morning exploring Galle’s maze of lanes, this is exactly where you’ll want to flop.
More civilized pampering
Then there’s The Baths, Amangalla’s beautiful spa, with treatment rooms, hydrotherapy facilities, a sauna and steam room.
And pinkies up! Afternoon tea on the veranda is something of an Amangalla ritual. Tea, cake and a shady colonial veranda after exploring Galle Fort? Very civilized indeed.
Good to know
- The pool is a big plus – Many historic hotels inside the Fort either have tiny pools (or none at all). Amangalla’s large garden pool feels like a genuine resort escape.
- It’s definitely a splurge –Amangalla is one of the priciest hotels in Galle. But you’re paying for the history, setting, Aman-level service and that delicious sense of staying somewhere truly special.

3) The Fortress Resort and Spa
A member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, the 5-star Fortress Resort & Spa is nine miles from Galle (in the seaside town of Koggala).
Its dramatic design takes its cue from Galle’s famous 17th-century fort – with massive walls and a low-slung, fortress-like facade. But inside, it’s all tropical gardens, swaying palms and Indian Ocean views.
Beyond the gardens, a long wave-washed beach stretches for miles to the west.
What a pool!
The first thing we saw when we walked through the open-air lobby was the enormous fiber-optic-lit pool – and the blue, blue ocean beyond.
And after weeks of touring, we were ready to do nothing but laze by that beautiful infinity pool, read in the hanging bubble chairs on the hotel lawn, and stroll the golden-sand beach.
Rooms and suites
There are 53 rooms and suites, all generously sized.
Most are sea-facing, with timber paneling, split-level layouts and corner lounges.
They feature super comfy king-sized beds (with Frette linens imported from Italy), arc floor lamps, modern lighting and ensuite bathrooms with rain showers, bathtubs and Bulgari toiletries.
For a splurge, huge Residence Suites come with their own outdoor pools.
Room tips
- Book a Beach Room for easy access to the garden, pool and beach – These ground-floor rooms put you steps from all three, and some also have indoor plunge pools. (The trade-off is less privacy.)
- Ask for a top-floor Ocean Room for more privacy – You’ll also get a balcony and views over the Indian Ocean.
- Spacious Fortress Rooms are great value – But they overlook the inner courtyard.
Half-board is the way to go
Dining here is excellent, which is a good thing, as there aren’t many restaurants within easy walking distance. A half-board plan makes sense.
The lavish weekly seafood buffet is a highlight, with grilled lobster, calamari, shrimp and fresh fish – and it’s popular with guests staying at other hotels in the Galle area too.
For romantic dining, snag one of the candlelit poolside tables under the stars.
Great mix of beach and Galle
The Fortress is perfect for winding down at the end of a busy Sri Lanka adventure.
But you don’t have to spend all your time horizontal. Galle Fort is a 25-minute drive away, making it easy to head into town for to explore, shop or have dinner.
That combination of beach bliss and easy sightseeing makes The Fortress one of the top Galle beach resorts for enjoying the best of both worlds.
Good to know
The beach isn’t great for swimming, as the surf can be strong. But the sand is perfect for long walks – something we did plenty of!

4) Fort Bazaar by Teardrop Hotels
For a hipper, more contemporary stay than Amangalla (#2 above) right inside Galle Fort, Fort Bazaar hits the sweet spot.
The 18-room boutique hotel occupies the former home of a spice merchant, but there’s nothing stuffy or old-fashioned about it.
Behind its heritage facade, the look is decidedly fresh – think Moorish-inspired tiles, arched doorways, four-poster beds and a leafy central courtyard shaded by frangipani and mango trees.
And there’s a new perk – a swimming pool!
Behind the central courtyard, it beckons with a sun terrace and four-poster daybeds for lazy afternoons.
Rooms and suites
- Bazaar Bedrooms open onto the sun-dappled courtyard – At 377 sq. ft., they have king or twin four-poster beds and walk-in rain showers.
- Banyan Bedrooms have private balconies or terraces – Slightly smaller, they’re hidden away beneath a huge old banyan tree at the far end of the courtyard.
- Upper Suites overlook the streets of Galle Fort – These 807 sq. ft. digs come with king-size four-poster beds, separate sitting areas, bathtubs and private terraces.
And for a cheeky touch of glam? There’s even a “Press for Champagne” button by the bed for summoning room service.
Eat, sip and spa
The hotel’s Church Street Social is more than a hotel restaurant – it’s a lively Galle hangout, serving Sri Lankan, Asian and European dishes, with cocktails on the street-facing veranda.
There’s also a small spa for massages and other treatments.
Good to know
- Some lovely extras are included – Rates include a full à la carte breakfast and afternoon tea with cake, plus cocktails during the hotel’s complimentary Social Hour.
- It’s livelier than Amangalla – If you want hushed old-world grandeur, Amangalla wins. Fort Bazaar is the pick for a younger, more relaxed and sociable vibe.

5) KK Beach Galle
This is where we’re dipping our toes in the sand on our next Sri Lanka trip!
Set on Habaraduwa Beach, about 7½ miles from Galle Fort, KK Beach Galle is an intimate boutique hotel with just 10 rooms and suites – all facing the Indian Ocean.
The vibe is contemporary and breezy, with whitewashed interiors, pops of blue and colorful Sri Lankan art. Open-air living and dining spaces spill onto a palm-dotted lawn, where a 65-foot infinity pool stretches toward the sea.
Rooms and suites
Accommodations have king beds, private furnished balconies and uninterrupted ocean views.
They’re wonderfully spacious too, ranging from 430 sq. ft. for the Ocean Deluxe Doubles to a whopping 1,130 sq. ft. for the largest Ocean Penthouse Suites.
- Ocean Suites give you more room to spread out – At 538 sq. ft., they have a separate sitting area with a banquette that can be converted into a bed for a third guest.
- The penthouses are the plum picks – Set on the upper floor, the Ocean Penthouses and Penthouse Suites have enormous balconies with sun loungers. The 1,130-sq.-ft. Penthouse Suites also feature huge bathrooms with both a tub and walk-in shower.
Beach bliss near Galle
The setting is delightfully laid-back.
Habaraduwa Beach is a long sandy sweep, fringed by coconut palms. You can stroll straight from the hotel garden onto the sand for barefoot walks along the shore.
Yet you’re not marooned in beach mode. When Galle Fort beckons, the hotel can arrange a tuk-tuk or car – and you can be there in about 20 minutes.
You get a sister hotel to play with
Recommended in the MICHELIN Guide, KK Beach is part of the KK Collection, along with Kahanda Kanda, a romantic boutique retreat tucked into a working tea estate overlooking Koggala Lake.
A complimentary shuttle links the two, and you can head over to Kahanda Kanda for lunch or dinner – or for spa treatments. (KK Beach offers in-room massages but doesn’t have a full spa.)
Good to know
Ocean swimming is seasonal. The sea off Habaraduwa can have strong currents, especially during the southwest monsoon.
Conditions are generally best for swimming from November to April, but check with the hotel before taking the plunge.
