Are you looking for the best beachfront hotels in Tulum, Mexico?

You’ve mulled it over – whether to stay in Tulum beach or town. True, the top hotels in Tulum Town and Aldea Zama are lovely. But, for you, it’s clear. Beachfront bliss beats the buzz of town.

Well, we can help. We visit and write about Tulum often.

What with chillaxing on gorgeous white sand beaches, exploring the ancient ruins in Tulum, eating at top-notch restaurants and swimming in Tulum’s cool cenotes, this little slice of Caribbean coastline is one of our favorite vacation spots.

Tulum is simply one of the most alluring beach towns on the Yucatan Peninsula!

We don’t like to brag, but with our years of experience exploring the Riviera Maya, we feel we’re a pretty decent source of information for crafting that picture-perfect Tulum vacation.

To save you the trouble of sifting through reviews on TripAdvisor and elsewhere, we’ve compiled a hot list of the best beach hotels in Tulum.

The best beachfront hotels in Tulum, Mexico, include La Zebra Tulum.

Best beachfront hotels in Tulum, Mexico

Tulum Beach is a 6-mile-long strip of beachfront that’s also known as the Hotel Zone.

You’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to accommodation, as there are literally dozens of luxury Tulum hotels on the beach. For true sybarites, several of these beachfront Tulum hotels have rooms with private pools too.

There are three main areas or places to stay in Tulum Beach:

  • South Tulum Beach zone
  • Middle Tulum Beach zone
  • North Tululm Beach zone

We’ll start with the Tulum Beach hotels at the southernmost end of the beach and work our way up north.

Quick guide: 5 favorite Tulum hotels on the beach

Just want a quick answer? See our short list of our favorite digs:

Best South Beach Tulum hotels

1) Olas Tulum

Large bed draped in white linens and mosquito netting in an Olas Tulum guest room that features a curved wall with windows

Olas Tulum is an intimate eco-friendly B&B with just eight suites in two white-washed villas. (We dig the curved walls and beamed ceilings in some rooms.)

It enjoys a quiet stretch of unspoiled beach next door to the UNESCO-listed Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve at the south end of Tulum Beach. Sun loungers dot the beach and hammocks swing in the sea breeze.

Complimentary inventive breakfasts? Check. (The huevos rancheros with chocolate mole are delish.) Bicycles you can borrow to ride into Tulum Town? Tick this box also. Super hospitable hosts? Indeed.

Yes, there’s lots to love about Olas Tulum!

The resort is totally 100% solar powered, so there’s no A/C. But the design of the villas means that a breeze blows through each room all the time.

Olas Tulum was originally a holiday home for the owner.

And that’s what it feels like to stay here – like you’re a guest at a friend’s fancy beach house (meals are communal).

Best for?

Eco-conscious couples craving a retreat in chic surroundings will love Olas Tulum. One of the best places to stay in Tulum beach, it’s gorgeous (in a minimalist way).

2) Casa Malca

Plush red wall behind the bed of a funky Casa Malca guest room

This place believes that luxury and art go hand-in-hand, so expect eye-grabbing architecture and plenty of radical artwork on the walls here.

Said to be a former bolthole for drug baron Pablo Escobar in the 1980s, Casa Malca was snapped up by New York art dealer Lio Malca.

He filled it with paintings, furniture and sculptures from his private art collection and turned it into a funky art hotel.

Coolest Insta-worthy spot? The entrance foyer, where ginormous white curtains (stitched from vintage wedding dresses) cascade down.

Most rooms offer amazing views of the Caribbean Sea, and you can have your pick of suites or beach rooms. (With 71 rooms, Casa Malca is one of the largest Tulum resorts on the beach.)

Spa treatments in nature at the Calma Spa are a must.

You should check out the meditation and relaxation spots too, as well as the underground pool and topside outdoor swimming pool.

Best for?

As one of the most interesting Tulum beachfront resorts, Casa Malca resonates with artistic types in touch with their creative side.

The casually elegant Nomade Hotel Tulum is one of the top Tulum hotels on the beach with a spiritual and health-and-fitness focus.

Bed down in a room, treehouse suite (perched on stilts and with hanging swing chairs) or – for a unique experience – a luxury tent. (All have air conditioning.)

The Master Tent gets our attention with its Moroccan décor influences, outdoor bathroom and outdoor plunge pool.

Plenty of artisanal vegan food is on offer day and night at its two toes-in-the-sand restaurants.

Macondo has a Middle Eastern twist with Fattoush salad, chicken tajine and baklava on the menu; La Popular on the beach serves up fresh seafood.

Experience local traditions through sacred fire rituals, cacao and Temazcal ceremonies, and a selection of free healing treatments like yoga and sound healing.

Live music and dancing also take place under the stars each night on the beach.

4) Be Tulum

Gray-hued guest room with concrete floors at Be Tulum, Mexico

One of the most expensive hotels in Tulum ($1,000+ USD night), Be Tulum is considered by many to be a bohemian jungle paradise. And for good reason!

It has 65 air-conditioned suites.

There are cozy retreats nestled in the jungle (some with private plunge pools). And then there are spacious oceanfront abodes, complete with rooftop terraces, pools and seductive views of the teal and turquoise tinted ocean.

Depending on the suite, they’re kitted out with plank or concrete floors, coral walls, leather-framed mirrors, copper tubs, hanging bird’s nest lamps and indoor/outdoor bathrooms.

Not all deluxe beachfront hotels in Tulum boast swimming pools. (Hey, the best pool is the big beautiful ocean right in front!)

Be Tulum has not just one infinity pool, but two – perfect for when you want a change of scene from the shaded daybeds on the beach.

A yoga studio also invites you to do sun salutations, and you can indulge in a hydrotherapy or other treatment at the resort’s stylish spa across the road.

Two on-site restaurants – Maresias (for freshly-caught seafood) and Ocumare (for fine Mexican cuisine) – round out the resort experience.

Set along South Tulum Beach, Be Tulum gives you great access to neighboring shops, restaurants and the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, and you can easily reach central Tulum in 15 to 20 minutes (traffic allowing).

Best for?

As one of the best luxury resorts in Tulum on the beach, Be Tulum is a wonderful place for the soul and the perfect spot for a romantic getaway (it has a strict 13-and-over age policy).

Couples in search of a special occasion resort, intimate dinners and quiet sunset drinks by the bar will be tickled to stay here.

NEST also has a 4-bedroom private villa which sleeps 8 to 10 guests.

A continental breakfast awaits you every morning.

For dinner, the hotel’s NU restaurant – one of the best restaurants in Tulum – is just across the beach road. In a sultry jungle setting, it teases the tastebuds with tantalizing Mexican cuisine.

The concierge can help with arranging airport transfers, restaurant reservations and tour bookings.

They feature polished hardwood floors, wrap-around decks, king-size canopy beds swathed in mosquito netting, air conditioning, bathrooms with blue tiled showers and organic toiletries.

Upper level beachfront rooms are crowned with thatched roof ceilings. Garden rooms have patios with hammocks.

Enjoy clear ocean views, lounging under beach palapas on a pristine private beach, a free breakfast every morning (the homemade granola is tops!) and access to all essential amenities to make your stay luxuriously comfortable.

There’s no onsite outdoor pool.

But just wander across the road to Encantada’s sister property Radhoo Tulum, set in the jungle, and you can do laps in their pool.

An inhouse restaurant serves breakfast and lunch.

Known as Tulum’s best boutique hotel in the Beach Zone for yogis and vegans, Lula (formerly Sanara Tulum) is a panacea for the soul.

The island vibes and décor are cool.

But it’s the focus on wellness and relaxation that makes this great place stand out.

You’ll find incredible yoga classes (in a glass-walled beachfront studio), bio-magnetic therapy and bio-decoding among the many items on the holistic wellness menu.

For those looking for something even more relaxing, opt for a spa treatment or two.

Organic skin products are also found in your room, along with a super king-size bed with bamboo linens.

We ate some of the heathiest (and tastiest!) food in Tulum at the hotel’s restaurant.

Plant-focused, the menus are all 100% gluten-free, grain-free and dairy-free. And the only oil used is avocado oil.

18) Mi Amor a Colibri Tulum Boutique Hotel

With a focus on romance, Mi Amor has our hearts with its secluded rocky setting on Tulum’s North Beach.

And talk about sensual design!

The private curtained gazebos and decks for two on the rocks, furnished with double daybeds, are ideal for honeymooners to lounge oceanside.

The 17 elegant rooms at this 5-star luxury hotel have king-size beds, wooden floors, air conditioning, rainfall showers, bathrobes and espresso makers. Pops of turquoise (in hanging lamps and textiles) add whimsical color.

Higher category rooms come with private plunge pools too. These seaview and seafront guest rooms cost a pretty penny, but they’re worth the splurge.

The restaurant, which serves Mediterranean and Mexican cuisine, also gets very high marks.

Like La Zebra (#9) and Mezzanine (#19), Mi Amor is part of Colibri Boutique Hotels and a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World.

Mezzanine is just a short walk away, so you can easily use its facilities for a change of scene.

Best for?

Mi Amor translates to “my love.” So it’s no surprise that it’s one of the best beachfront hotels in Tulum for couples. You’re sure to fall in love with it!

19) Mezzanine

Personalized service is a huge selling point at this elegant Tulum boutique hotel. You’re welcomed with margaritas, and the friendly staff are eager to help in any way they can.

Plus, you can’t get any closer to the Tulum National Park.

Mezzanine is literally inside the park. You’re soooo close to the ruins – one of the most beautiful Mayan sites in the Yucatan, by the way –  that you can get an early start and be the first ones to visit.

Rooms have A/C and are stocked with beach bags and yoga mats for your use.

The onsite Thai restaurant is run by a celebrity chef.

And a master mixologist creates herb- and flower-infused concoctions. They’re so intoxicating, you’ll be ordering seconds before you’ve even downed your first.

Ruby- and peach-colored cocktails at Mezzanine, Tulum

The only downside is that the beach is rocky.

So while you can still swim in the sea, most lounging is done from the deck of your room or hotel terrace.

Like its sister hotel La Zebra (#9), Mezzanine is a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World.

Best for?

Mexico fans with an itch for exploring – Mezzanine is just minutes from the Tulum archaeological site – and cocktail aficionados.

Jashita Tulum, set on a white sand beach and surrounded by lush palms and jungle

There’s only one word for Jashita Hotel – sensational!

Slightly off the beaten track in Soliman Bay (about 20 minutes north of Tulum), Jashita is spread out over five acres of beachfront, giving you lots of room to stake out your place on the sand and drink in the glorious views.

Its 30 chic air-conditioned suites come with four-poster beds, Italian linens, bidets in the bathrooms and twice-daily maid service.

Waterfront suites have outdoor showers; the Penthouse has its own rooftop swimming pool.

Chocolates and a bottle of wine welcome you upon arrival.

Jashita’s Pandano restaurant has a wonderful deck overlooking the ocean, offering a mix of Italian and Mexican flavors.

It promises long leisurely dinners of ceviche, homemade lobster fettucine and grilled octopus.

Guests drink and eat on the alfresco deck overlooking the ocean at Jashita Tulum.

Separate adults and kids swimming pools, plus a dedicated pool bar, keep your days cool and full of fun.

Onsite yoga, kayaking, paddleboarding, snorkeling and scuba diving are also available.

Best for?

Not many luxury Tulum resorts on the beach are family-friendly. This one is.

But with lots of adult areas, it’s quite romantic for couples too.

Hi! Do you have a favorite Tulum hotel for my husband and me? We'd like a resort (not too old) with a nice beach and good food. Any suggestions?

Janice and George

Friday 1st of December 2023

There are quite a few hotels fitting your description, so you're going to be spoiled for choice!

Maybe figure out first if you'd prefer to stay in the quieter South Beach zone of Tulum Beach, the buzzier Middle Beach area or the north part.

For more food options close by, the Middle Beach area might be your best bet. Look at La Zebra, Lula, The Beach Tulum and Hotel Ma'xanab in this area.
