Some hotels win you over the moment you arrive – and Le Petit Hotel is one of them.

Within moments of checking in, we felt like we’d slipped into a sunny slower-paced version of Caribbean island life, where mornings began with croissants on our balcony and the sea practically lapped at our doorstep.

Tucked at the quiet end of Grand Case Beach on French St. Martin, it’s the tiny sister hotel to Hotel L’Esplanade (where we also stayed). With 10 beautifully designed rooms and a dreamy beachfront setting, it’s no surprise this little treasure is of our very favorite boutique hotels on St. Martin/St. Maarten.

Here’s our review.

Rooms

Full-kitchen studios

All rooms (except one) are sleek open-plan studios with full kitchens – we loved having the freedom to make snacks and chill rosé on our own schedule.

They come with cool grey slate floors, king-size beds and white Corian counters. White-washed walls are accented with beaten-silver sconces and plates, giving the spaces a subtle sun-washed Moroccan feel.

Bathrooms are bright and generously sized, with double sinks and rain showers.

Every studio is oceanfront, too. Each has a private balcony overlooking one of the loveliest beaches on the island – ideal for breakfast, a pre-dinner sundowner or a nightcap under the stars.

Housekeeping is excellent, kept to a high standard.

Most rooms are Deluxe Studios

On the second and third floors of the hotel, the Deluxe Studios are 477 square feet in size:

  • 2nd floor studios – They have Brazilian hardwood ceilings, creating a cozy “luxury yacht” feel, and the balconies are shaded.
  • 3rd floor studios – High vaulted ceilings make these rooms brighter and airier, with balconies that get full sun.

All have 105 sq. ft. red-tiled terraces furnished with a small table and high-top chairs.

They’re great for enjoying the view when seated at the table – you can see over the solid three-foot railing. (From our top-floor Deluxe Studio, we loved the sweeping views over Grand Case Beach.)

But they’re not meant for full lounging, as they don’t have recliners.

Our favorite rooms?

The two ground-floor rooms are the real showstoppers, thanks to their private terraces with direct beach access:

  • One-Bedroom Suite (940 sq. ft.) – With an oversized terrace spanning the bedroom and living/kitchen areas
  • Oversized Deluxe Studio (540 sq. ft.)

If you score one of these, you’ve hit the jackpot, as you can step straight onto the sand from your terrace.

Beachfront location

Set at the quiet far end of Grand Case, Le Petit Hotel enjoys a wonderfully peaceful stretch of sand – removed from the busier restaurant zone and livelier beach clubs. It feels secluded, serene and delightfully refined.

The beach is so inviting, all we wanted to do was lie on a lounger under an umbrella with a good book, occasionally rousing ourselves for a swim in the sea. That’s what most guests come here for too – pure unwind mode.

If you feel like being more active, there’s a SUP board you can take out for a paddle.

The only improvement we think could be made would be to swap out the beach chairs for more comfortable ones with cushions.

Services

Gracious hosts

Family-owned and run, Le Petit Hotel is helmed by long-time hosts who greet you like returning friends. Warm, helpful and full of local intel, they instantly set the tone for a stay that feels personal in all the best ways.

The reception desk is staffed during the day, though not in the evening or overnight.

No pool, but access to Hotel L’Esplanade

Le Petit Hotel doesn’t have a pool (just that sparkling blue sea steps from your lounger).

But you can visit the pool at Hotel L’Esplanade and join their yoga classes (think a breezy hilltop setting and chirping birds!).

Grand Case shuttle

Your ride is waiting! (Credit: Le Petit Hotel)

The hotel offers a free on-demand shuttle into town every evening, making dinner at Grand Case’s fabulous restaurants a total breeze.

Now, you can walk to the main part of Grand Case along the beach (about 10 minutes) or along the road. But the road route is narrow, busy and not very pleasant.

We found it better to use the excellent shuttle service, which runs from 6 pm to midnight.

Breakfast included

Rates include a complimentary continental breakfast.

Between 8:00 and 10:00 am, simply pick up your basket from reception – with a pot of coffee, fresh fruit and your pre-ordered treats (think ham-and-cheese croissants or apple turnovers) – and enjoy it back in your room or on your balcony.

Le Petit Hotel, St. Martin, review: Bottom line

If you adore intimate boutique stays over big bells-and-whistles resorts, Le Petit Hotel is easy to fall for.

You won’t find an on-site restaurant or pool – but, honestly, we didn’t miss them (especially with the handy dinner shuttle to Grand Case).

You also don’t need to rent a car to enjoy your stay here, as taxis are plentiful. We did rent wheels for a few days to explore more of the island (just be prepared for a snug parking lot out front).

If you value peace, personality and oceanfront living, Le Petit Hotel is one of St. Martin’s sweetest gems.

Our top travel tips and resources

General trip planning: TripAdvisor is a helpful starting point, offering loads of user reviews on hotels, restaurants and things to do.

Hotels: Booking.com is our go-to for scoring a “wow” hotel – or at least a decent one – often at lower rates than the hotel’s own website. (We especially like Booking’s flexible cancellation policy!) You can also find great discounted rates on Expedia, especially for hotels in the U.S. and Mexico.

Vacation homes, condos and rentals: We prefer and use Vrbo (Vacation Rentals by Owner).

Flights: For the cheapest flights, search on Google Flights or Expedia. (Just be aware Expedia tickets are often non-refundable. If you want more flexibility, it’s usually worth booking directly with the airline, even if it costs a bit more.)

Airport lounge access: We love (and have) Priority Pass for comfy lounge seats, free snacks and drinks, complimentary WiFi and sometimes even showers and spa services!

Tours: For the best local food, walking and other guided tours, plus skip-the-line tickets to attractions, check out Viator (a TripAdvisor company) and GetYourGuide.

Car rental: Renting a car is often a great way to explore off the beaten path. Discover Cars searches car rental companies so you get the lowest rates.

eSIMS: Stay connected affordably with Airalo eSIMS covering 200+ countries and trusted by 10 million+ users, including us! (No more huge roaming bills!)

Travel insurance: SafetyWing is designed for frequent travelers, long-term adventurers and digital nomads. It covers medical expenses, lost checked luggage, trip interruption and more. We also have and recommend Medjet for global air medical transportation.

Travel gear: See our travel shop to find the best luggage, accessories and other travel gear. (We suggest these comfy travel sandals for city walking, the beach and kicking about.)
