You might have noticed we’ve been a bit quiet here lately on our blog. That’s because we’re moving to Victoria!
Huh? Aren’t we Vancouver devotees? Haven’t we lived in Vancouver virtually all our married lives – raised our son and formed irreplaceable friendships here? Won’t we miss the city?
But Victoria – dubbed the “City of Gardens” – is a beautiful city too. (And if we hadn’t settled in Vancouver when making our big move originally from Calgary, Victoria would have been our other choice. We spent some happy days in Victoria on our honeymoon!)
In some ways, Victoria is like a smaller version of Vancouver – with drivers who always stop for pedestrians and really friendly people who have time to chat with you in the grocery store. And it’s growing – sprouting a mini-version of Vancouver’s Yaletown of glitzy, fun condos along the Gorge for the many techies that now make Victoria their home.
Victoria is a cyclist’s dream. We’ll get a bike rack for our car and plan to do a LOT of bicycling (there are some great cycling trails in and around the city, like the charmingly named “Galloping Goose” trail).
We’ll buy stand-up paddleboards and go paddleboarding around the sailboats in Oak Bay, and spy cormorants, seals and otters in bird nesting islands just a few hundred feet off the beach. And this will be less than a 5-minute drive from our new home – how fantastic is that?
We’ll walk from our house to downtown when we feel like it – to go out for dinner or to see a show, just because we want to. (A bit easier than trying to get to downtown Vancouver, what with the traffic.)
But there’s no doubt we’ll miss Vancouver – its close-by forested mountains, its parks (Stanley Park, sigh…), and most of all, our many friends.
Needless to say, we’ve been quite busy lately with all that’s involved in a move – selling, then buying a new house in Victoria, packing, scanning many filing cabinets’ worth of paper files collected over the years so we can have almost digital offices now, culling (do we really need those shell dishes for Coquille St. Jacques? who even makes Coquille St. Jacques anymore?), disposing of excess furniture, making yet another trip to the mover’s for more tape and boxes, etc.
So we’re still around – just a little pre-occupied with moving to Victoria. And then, after we move, we’re treating ourselves with a two-week Baltic cruise with Viking Cruises. We know we’ll have lots to tell you about St. Petersburg, Stockholm, Flam and other exciting destinations we visit on this upcoming cruise!
(The picture above, BTW, is that of Craigdarroch Castle in Victoria.)
