For a gracious, old-world style hotel with a prestigious address in the heart of the city, look no further than the Hotel Diplomat Stockholm.

It’s one of the best Stockholm hotels – indeed, one of the best hotels in Europe.

You’re probably going to walk Gamla Stan (Stockholm’s Old Town). And you’ll definitely want to visit Drottningholm Palace.

Maybe you’re even going to stay four days in Stockholm!

So having a great place to stay in Stockholm will make your time in this lovely city that much more enjoyable.

Hotel Diplomat Stockholm review

The crimson awnings that automatically roll down over the windows in sunshine make the boutique hotel easy to spot from the street.

Check-in is deftly handled at the reception desk in the middle of the hotel’s T-shaped restaurant and bar.

It’s an unusual place to have a check-in counter.

But with restaurant-goers lingering over a late lunch and enjoying afternoon tea, we immediately experienced the lively buzz of the T-Bar restaurant – and it made us want to join the scene over “We’ve made it to Stockholm!” drinks.

Classic touches

Just beside the restaurant-bar, an antique birdcage-like elevator takes you up to your room.

To return to the lobby, skip the elevator at least once and walk down the circular marble staircase that wraps around the elevator.

With burnished gold railings, lined with stained-glass windows, it reminds you of all those fabulous circular staircases you see in vintage flicks, where glam movie stars sashay down to make their grand entrance.

Diplomat Hotel rooms

All 130 rooms are serene, decorated in ivory and dove grey colors, with blonde wood furniture and extraordinarily high ceilings.

Some are small by North American standards.

But book a junior suite like we did, and you’ll delight in a spacious, octagonal-shaped room with two Juliet balconies overlooking boats and passenger ferries plying the Strandvagen waterfront.

Bathrooms feature thick robes, slippers and lovely Argan bath products.

And while originally built in 1911, this 5-star Stockholm hotel satisfies modern-day tastes with smart phones and flat-screen TVs.

Hotel Diplomat Restaurant: T-Bar

Hungry for dinner?

Pop down to the T-Bar restaurant, considered one of the best restaurants in Stockholm.

Just be sure you have a reservation – the bistro-style resto and bar with granite tables is hugely popular with locals and hotel guests.

In the mornings, a breakfast buffet (included in the rates) is offered here – try the traditional Swedish soured milk (like yogurt) with lingonberries.

Then when you’re ready to venture out sightseeing, most tourist sites are within walking distance.
